Scrum Alliance’s User Group - Agile Chandigarh, Makes a Grand Debut with Agile Carnival

Powered by J90, a mixed used project by Mona Townships Pvt Ltd, Agile Carnival positions Chandigarh on global business map

Agile Chandigarh organized its first ever Agile Carnival which has made Chandigarh’s presence felt in the global business community. Agile Chandigarh is the official user group of Scrum Alliance, one of the world’s largest Scrum advocacy communities. The two-day event (4-5 April) at Indian School of Business (ISB) Mohali saw participation from 120+ CXOs from MNCs and Start-ups. This non-profit, volunteer run-up tasted the heavenly sweetness of success like nobody from the Agile community in India ever has.

18+ world renowned speakers, 50+ gigantic participating companies, a knowledge transfer of the best of the best management practices and a huge networking opportunity for North India’s business and IT hub- Agile Carnival surpassed expectations of all. In the words of Tathagat Verma (Ex-Sr. Yahoo Director & Founder of Thought Leadership), ‘This is the first time ever that an Agile Event in India is happening on such a large scale and that too held in such an elite institution’.

Day 1 of Agile Carnival was full of energy, enthusiasm and immense learning. Profound speakers like Tathagat Verma, Manoj Jain (Director of Make My Trip), Sekhar Burra (Certified Scrum Coach), Sastry Tumuluri, Tanmay Vora, Sukhmeet Singh, Hirdesh Madan and Deepti Jain  shared  their views on the effectiveness of having a Agile approach in business development across sectors.

The utility and applicability of Agile across diverse sectors came out aptly through the presentation by Mona Townships Pvt Ltd (MTPL), a leading real estate firm in the region, on the implementation of Agile in its upcoming development Jade Business Park, the commercial arm of its mixed–used project ‘J90’ in sector-90, Mohali. Agile, primarily a software development model has been incorporated by MTPL in its project development methodology, which makes Jade Business Park a dynamic project. This is achieved by taking on board the customers as co-creators, delivering projects based on ‘shippable product increment over full and final delivery’ and maintaining a ‘constant feedback mechanism’ which helps ‘respond to change’ thereby facilitating ‘continual improvement’.

Day 2 saw Ritu Mehta (Director-Pitney Bowes), Sarabjit Bakshi (Agile Coach) and Harsha Vardhan (Director-Accretive Health) inspire brilliance in the room with the open house session by Mr. Sahil Sahore being like a cherry on the cake.

The preparation for this prodigious event started merely months ago, with just two enthusiastic souls- Deepanshu Goyal (Group Owner- Agile Chandigarh) and Simarpreet Singh (Event Head), and as they say ‘Main akela hi chala tha magar, log milte gye aur karwan banta gya’. So hands kept joining in to help, plan, deliver, feed and raise this event into a happening that Chandigarh has never experienced before.

Some of the notable keynotes included sessions by Ritu Mehta on ‘Art of Estimation’, Sarabjit Bakshi on ‘Teaching that makes Sense’ and a panel discussion on ‘Is Agility for your Industry?’

“The Agile Team is overwhelmed at such warmth and respect from everyone around. For those who missed the event, we’ve included snippets on keynotes.agilechd.com. This carnival is just a beginning of endless opportunities for Tricity and NCR region”, says Deepanshu Goyal, Scrum Alliance group owner of the youngest ever Agile Team globally.

Deepanshu Goyal - Group Owner, Agile Chandigarh

“I have been seeing that people from Chandigarh had to go to Bangalore or NCR for getting certifications and Agile trainings. I too had to face the same problem. This was the inspiration behind starting an official Scrum Alliance Group in Chandigarh. I envision Chandigarh as the next big IT hub in the coming years.”

Simarpreet Singh - Events Head, Agile Chandigarh

“This event tested my leadership skills and made me go out of my comfort zone. I am thankful to my young, enthusiastic team which worked in perfect coordination. We spent 3 months to set the ground for this Carnival and it has been a roller coaster ride. The two days of event had immense learning opportunity for all of us.”

Mr. Sagar Setia, Director, Mona Townships Pvt Ltd (MTPL)

“At Mona Townships Pvt Ltd, we are constantly evolving our practices to deliver the best real estate products. Being a software engineer by qualification, I was well aware of the Agile model. I realized its functionality was not limited to software development alone and so, at MTPL, we have incorporated it in our project development methodology. Our upcoming mixed-use project J90 in Mohali is being developed on Agile. At Jade Business Park, the commercial arm of J90, we have earmarked space dedicatedly for IT and IT-enabled services.”

Ritu Mehta - Director, Pitney Bowes

“Agile Chandigarh event held at ISB was a great event, very well organized; there was good participation from various Industry thought leaders from all regions. Tathagat Verma - Founder, Thought Leadership

“Agile Chandigarh marks a great opportunity in Chandigarh region to learn about agile development which is extremely relevant for industry today. In terms of the event, the Agile Chandigarh team has done an awesome job of organising this first conference in ISB. It was impressive to see almost 100 participants sitting through the entire weekend and interacting with speakers who came from Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Bangalore as well as from Chandigarh. I hope that the movement grows in the coming days. I wish them every success, and look forward to be there next year as well.”
